So, the other day, I did my first attempt at the Japanese 'Shironuri' makeup.... well, it was more of a test-run, really.
I was inspired when I saw an interview with a girl named 'Minori'. She said that a lot of people do 'shironuri' but most of them are gothic. When I researched it, she was the only one I could find who wasn't gothic. She's inspired by nature, so it really stuck out at me!
I wish there was an actual name for this style! I think that 'Shironuri' just means white paint or something so I think that term is broadly used for all white-faced makeup, including geishas. But I've never been remotely interested in geishas or anything like that, so it would be awesome if this style had a name! I hope it will get one!
Like I said, it was just a test run. I used some old roses that were all dried up. I'm hoping to do it for real soon and record it for a video.
I cut up a feather that Neton found outside a while ago, and I glued bits of it to a pair of old eyelashes. I think they're the ones I wore on tv in Romania.
I was originally going to paint the back black (where I glued the feathers) and apply mascara to them, so it looked like long, stray eyelashes. I changed my mind though, I liked the colour difference.
I really like how they turned out!
Hahahahaha /\ I threw my hair over my shoulder like a scarf but omg - look at all the cracks!
I'm having trouble with the white base. I actually bought two different white foundations from Ebay but they're both rubbish! One of them isn't white enough and the other is just like a cream eyeshadow - it made me look grey and shiny, like a zombie or something!
So I ended up just using white face paint! But when I use white face paint it cracks! I don't know what to do! That girl, Minori, her face looked so smooth and wearable. Whereas this face paint barely allows you to move your mouth. It dries up so much! I looked like I had loads of wrinkles because it had dried up so much! ARGH!
So if any of you have any advice on how I can stop it from drying up and cracking, please tell me! >_<
Hopefully, I'll be filming the real Shironuri makeup soon. I can't wait! <3
omg yes!
ReplyDeleteHahaha =] <3

ReplyDelete(im a guy so i know)
DeleteLol you need to gtfo she isn't trying to please you or any other man. her look is her choice plus her bf thinks she's beautiful no matter how she looks.
DeleteMen are the last thing on my mind when I do makeup.... or anything for that matter. The world has changed, women don't have to build themselves for mens pleasure anymore. We're free to do what we want.
DeleteWow you look great!! I think this style suits you very well!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! <3
Deletewow this looks good for you first attempt! May I ask what kind of product you used to get your skin this white?
ReplyDeleteThank you! I used white face-paint. I think it's called 'Snazeroo' <3
DeleteI use snazaroo too, its horrendous though :( Ive tried everything (I have dry skin though which makes it worse) Some people have told me add a spritz of water, use primers, use this that and the other but snazaroo is just USELESS! I had the same problem, I have no idea what to use (I assume an expensive theater/stage make up would be better but ... hard to find and hard to find at an AFFORDABLE price!!!)
DeleteCan't wait the next shironuri makeup! This is all new to me and I really like how it is so uncommon-looking
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! <3
DeleteThose lashes are amazing! You are so talented (*o*)
ReplyDeleteI really like this look, so pretty and mystical! <3
Thank you so much! I hope I can do it better next time! <3
DeleteI love it! You look like a forest fairy <3
ReplyDeleteThank you! <3
DeleteThe lashes are so creative! I love the idea. When I saw the first picture I was like wow how'd she makes those so I like that you included how they were made. It's like little branches growing off your eyelashes~
ReplyDeleteHaha thank you so much! <3
DeleteU look so magic *_*
ReplyDeleteAnyway this hair color (I quess - wig) really suits U <3
Thank you! This is a new wig, I haven't actually styled it yet (woops!), all I've done is cut a fringe <3
DeleteYou are just genius o.o Just can't find words xD Wow! Also I LOVE the wig *^*
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! =]<3
DeleteWoooow it looks so damn beautiful!!!! Please make more of it!
ReplyDeleteA friend once suggested me Stargazer Make up: http://www.stargazer-products.com/details/?id=5&sub_id=56&product_id=44&style_id= But I never tested it myself.
I own a bottle of MAC white Body & Face foundation, you can really paint a white face with it but it is very expensive :( So maybe better try the Stargazer one first :)
Thank you so much! Ah, I saw Stargazer but I thought that was too expensive too! I should stop being so tight with my money haha. I might look on Ebay for it, thanks! <3
DeleteI really love hoe this style suits you so much. Please do shironuri more often. Btw I love Minori she is so inspirational and this post too. Lots of kisses
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope to do this quite often! <3
DeleteHello~
ReplyDeleteI am happy to see some people are trying shironuri outside Japan!!
And I love how you did your lashes! (´∀`)
''shironuri'' is the name most people use for this style, but some also call it ''shiro mamba''~
The reason why there isn't a more precise name is because there are no clothing restrictions or things like this, basically as long as you use white foundation it can be called shironuri!
Also, Minori isn't the only one with a more colourful style, but sadly the other ones aren't as ''famous'' on the internet. : (
I hope to see more shironuri looks from you soon ♡
(And if you have any question about shironuri let me know~~ )
Thank you! Ah, I just looked at your blog and saw that you are Shironuri! That's awesome! I have some questions for you!
Delete1. What foundation do you recommend?
2. Who are some other shironuri (besides Minori)?
Ah, I really want to go to Japan >_< <3
Yes I am! Or at least I try to be haha
DeleteFor the foundation, the only one I have tried yet is Ben Nye cream foundation, it isn't too expensive and it works well (I bought it at a costume shop). I fix it with baby powder~
If you have more budget I am sure MAC products are really good too, but they are quite expensive!
Here are some blogs of cool and (sometimes) colourful shironuri people☆
Shioka : http://ameblo.jp/puapuapink/
Uri : http://ameblo.jp/oyasuminasai123/
Tsunoshi : http://ameblo.jp/freakshow333/
Bazookistan : http://ameblo.jp/sinimini/
There are also some Tokyo Decadence performers doing crazy shironuri outfits!
It is hard to find shironuri pictures on sites like tumblr, but http://qhoto.org/ and http://snap.kuchinawa.com/ are two good sites, they both post party snaps of angura/shironuri events~!
I hope you can go to Japan someday! I'm sure people over there would love your style too! ♡
You're really good! Ah, yes - Mac is too expensive for me. I'll look at that other brand you mention though!
DeleteThanks for taking the time to send those blog-links to me! They're all fantastic! I really like Tsunoshi!
Those two sites are really good too! Ah, thank you! You're so helpful!
I've been to Japan before, but lots of bad things happened so I didn't get to enjoy it! GR! Hopefully, I'll go again some day! <3
I once saw a video of Minori and she hardly could move her mouth because of the paint, couldn't even laugh. So you are not alone with those troubles ^^
ReplyDelete~Emi
Ah, ok that makes me feel a little better! Hahaha >_< Thank you! <3
DeleteWhite foundation is SO hard to get to work naturally. I have worn it on stage and you're right you can hardly move can you? I can only think of researching it online, maybe via Alt Fashion Magazine or something to find out what goths who wear it every day do! I have heard mineral bases are good, but also oil based rather than water based paints might work...?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info! I'll look again. I bought two foundations that goths use but they were just pale and not paper-white. Someone suggestion mac foundation but I can't really afford that. I might just have to try again with the white face paint! Ha oh well! <3
DeleteYou are my greatest creative inspiration, love this :3
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! <3
DeleteI was also really struck by Minori's shironuri makeup. It looks really cool! I can't help but think Clown White would actually be great for this. Mehron and Ben Nye both make one that's supposed to be really good and they also sell setting powders to increase the whiteness. It's a theatrical makeup so it should leave your face moveable without cracking.
ReplyDeleteOh awesome! I'm going to search for it now! Thank you! =] <3
DeleteIf you're looking for a good white base makeup, I suggest mehron clown white. Its pretty thick but applies really well. I've used it multiple times before, it never cracks, and it doesn't fade/mess up after hours of having it on. However it is very greasy since its a creme but just slap some baby powder on top of it and all the grease disappears. Its cheap too. I've gotten an 8oz jar before and its lasted a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteyou mentioned video so does this mean you're releasing the gyaru awards soon? or are we never going to see them?
ReplyDeleteAlso i love this make on you, its in my personal opinoin so much more flattering on you especially with your specific eye lash make shape i feel it flatters this look so much better than your gyaru looks!
I honestly am surprised that this was just slapped on it looks so pro already so talented!!
The make-up they use is normally authentic geisha make-up!

But another alternative may be this recipe!

Minori probably uses authentic Shiro-nuri makeup... the kind that kabuki actors and geiko wear... you can buy it from Hanari-ya, but it's quite expensive...
ReplyDeleteI've also heard about a combination of Illamsqua white foundation with ben nye "super white" setting powder... also Clown White (blanc de clown) from snazaroo.
Really, anything by Ben Nye should have favourable results.
Awesome tryout!
ReplyDeletethe last photo, within you've mentioned about the cracks, I think it's' nice, because it remembered an old and beautiful statue! ;)
I know that this post is very old but Minori uses grease paint for the white base ^^
